People who participated in the first Values Conversation were asked for one word to describe how they were feeling, those words were universally positive. The broad themes that emerged were those of intrigue, curiosity, interest and of being valued. There was a strong expression of excitement and energy from the people in the virtual space.
When invited to share how they felt when they received the results of the Values Audit many people noted that they were not surprised by their results. A theme of the importance of people and self was evident. Collaboration and doing meaningful work was important.
There was a strong correlation between life experience and how people’s values showed up at work. Equality and the diversity of individuals’ values within the group was also noted. A sense of pride was expressed at the ‘magic’ that happens when people come together to hold conversations about what they value. People appreciated the Rules of Engagement as a means of setting the tone for people’s conversations.
Participants were pleased to be part of a conversation about how core values can shape the organisation’s future. The idea that everyone has a part to play in this was welcomed and talking about our values helped people to feel a part of something bigger. A deeper connection with colleagues was felt by many, a result of being a part of a values conversation with other people. Creating a psychologically safe environment, underpinned by trust was seen as helping to create the conditions in which people could be confident that their voice would be heard.
On closing the first conversation there was a strong thread of appreciation, positivity and thanks for being invited to and involved in the conversation. There was an overwhelming curiosity about what might come next and what will unfold for the organisation as this journey of change unfolds.
